German politician explores using Russian gas to pay for US taxes

German politician calls for resuming Russian gas supplies in response to US tariffs.

Sahra Wagenknecht - lawmaker Bundestag, leader of the Sahra Wagenknecht - Reasonable and Justice (BSW) - said that Germany should respond to US tariffs by reconnecting Russian gas supplies, promoting economic relations with BRICS countries and escaping US dependence on technology and energy.

In the context of uncertainty in the financial market, Ms. Sahra Wagenknecht warned of an impending global economic crisis and called for the application of a comprehensive package of measures to stimulate the German economy.

"The stock market is plummeting and there is a real risk of a global financial crisis," the German politician shared on the T-online portal.

In the context of the US tax, she said Germany should reconsider its strategy. She said Berlin should establish closer economic ties with the BRICS countries, escape its energy and digital dependence on the US and start receiving gas back via pipeline from Russia.

Ms. Sahra Wagenknecht noted that Germany is about to enter the third year of economic recession. She urged leaders of the Christian Democratic Union and Social Democratic Party Friedrich Merz and Lars Klingbeil to come up with a concrete plan to prevent the economic crisis.

On April 2, US President Donald Trump announced a plan to impose tariffs on goods from 185 countries and territories. The 10% general tax rate will take effect on April 5, while the individual tax rates applied to some countries and territories will take effect from April 9. The US has also imposed a 25% tariff on all cars imported into the country since April 3.

In November last year, in an interview with Berliner Zeitung, Sahra Wagenknecht also pointed out: The upcoming German government needs to seriously consider repairing and re-activating at least the intact part of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

Ms. Wagenknecht emphasized that the explosion of the Nord Stream pipeline system, including Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2, was "a sabotage blow to the German economy and an act of sabotage aimed at the infrastructure of Germany and Europe".

High energy prices are one of the main causes of the current economic crisis, threatening tens of thousands of jobs in the industrial sector, she said.

The lawmaker of the Sahra Wagenknecht - Reasonable and Justice coalition stressed that the upcoming Bundestag should establish a special committee to investigate the Nord Stream sabotage because the German Justice Office had not fully fulfilled its role in investigating the case.

On January 3, 2025, lawmaker Bundestag Sevim Dagdelen, also a member of the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance - Reasons and Justice, called on Germany to restart the intact branch of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.
