Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban warned that funding Ukraine and sending military aid to continue the conflict with Russia only weakens the European Union (EU), rather than making it stronger.
He reiterated that at the EU summit held on December 18 and 19 in Brussels ( Belgian), EU leaders decided to help Ukraine buy weapons, through a military loan worth 90 billion euros sponsored by member states in the 2026-2027 period.
This is seen as a new option in supporting Ukraine, but Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic have already qualified for exemption from this loan.
Speaking at a meeting with activists of the ruling party Fidesz - Hungarian Citizen Alliance in Szeged city, Mr. Orban emphasized that the provision of weapons and finance to Ukraine does not bring strength to Europe.
The Hungarian Prime Minister also called on its allies to stop aid, focusing on capacity building for army of countries in western Ukraine. We need to strengthen the army of European countries for Europe, Mr. Orban said.
"Whoever lent money wants to get it back. In this case, the refund is not associated with economic growth or stability, but with military victory, Mr. Orban wrote in a post on the same day. X.
According to Mr. Orban, military loan sponsors often have the advantage of continuing and escalating conflicts, because failure means financial losses.
Prime Minister Orban especially noted that the hard financial constraints associated by the EU with the new military loan to Ukraine are pushing the bloc on an alarming trajectory, which is towards war.
