The US Federal Bureau of Investigation ( FBI) believes that suspect Thomas Matthew Crooks acted alone in the plot to assassinate former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, but is still under investigation.
Fox News reported that on July 14, the FBI announced that it was investigating the assassination of former President Donald Trump as a potential terrorist act.
In a press conference just a day after the failed assassination of former President, Robert Wells, assistant director of the FBI's Anti-terrorism Department, said the agency was using "all the resources in its hands".
We have a 24/7 command post in Pittsburgh as well as at the FBI headquarters and we are giving all the resources we have. Our number one goal is to determine the subject's motives and determine whether he has any other associates or anyone else involved at this time.
Wells said the FBI identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, and the 20-year-old as a "lone shooter" but further investigation is needed.
"We are investigating a assassination attempt but also consider this to be an act of domestic terrorism. Our anti-terrorism and crime teams are working together to determine the motive, said Mr. Wells.
Kevin Rojek, FBI's special agent in charge of the Pittsburgh subdivision, said there were no public safety concerns.
"At this point, the information we have shows that the shooter acted alone and there are currently no public safety concerns. We have not identified any ideology related to this incident, but I would like to remind everyone that the investigation is still in the very early stages.
The FBI is working to determine the order of events related to the subject and the execution of this person as well as the time, day and week before the shooting, and is monitoring all units investigating the case.
The shooting began shortly after Donald Trump took the stage at around 6 p.m. local time on July 13.
There were some loud explosions and Mr. Trump with blood on his face and ears taken off stage.
After the shooting, Trump's campaign confirmed that the former president was "afraid".
On the evening of July 14, Mr. Trump was discharged from the hospital after being checked. He is expected to attend the Republican National Committee in Milwaukee on July 15 to receive the Republican Party's nomination for president.
CNBC reported that investors believe that the failed assassination increase the likelihood of Mr. Trump being re-elected in the 2024 US presidential election and traders bet on his victory to skyrocket next week.
