Gazprom's lawsuit was filed with the St. Petersburg Arbitration Court. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region on June 5. The database did not provide detailed information about the lawsuit, TASS said.
In January 2024, a Russian court banned Ukraine's Naftogaz from pursuing a lawsuit at the International Arbitration Court ICC. At that time, the court ruled that Naftogaz would pay Gazprom $150 million if it did not comply with the ban. According to the latest ruling, the fine will exceed $1.35 billion.
Gazprom's representative at the court said that the company believes that ensuring innocentness in the dispute settlement process at the International Arbitration Court is unrealistic, because the court is located in France, the actual trial took place in Switzerland, and 2 out of 3 judges were appointed as citizens of Switzerland and Sweden, which have imposed sanctions on Russia and are considered by Moscow as unfriendly countries.
In the fall of 2022, Naftogaz of Ukraine filed a lawsuit against Gazprom with the International Arbitration Court on charges of late payment of gas transportation service fees through Ukraine. Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller said the refereeing procedure was illegal and that the Russian corporation's involvement in the process was meaningless.
Alexey Miller also said that Russia could impose sanctions on Naftogaz if the Ukrainian company continues to make dishonest moves that make any future relations impossible.
