According to Xinhua News Agency, on the evening of August 3 (local time), the Guatemalan National Coordinating Agency for Natural Disaster Mitigation (CONRED) issued a nationwide orange warning amidst the continued increase in Fuego volcano eruption activity. People living in 2 villages near the volcano have begun to be evacuated.
Fuego volcano is about 35km from the capital Guatemala City. CONRED said the volcano is erupting large amounts of gas, ash and lava fragments, while the heat flow is moving towards the Seca and Ceniza crevices on the southwestern slope of the volcano.
Volcanic ash columns have risen to an altitude of 5,000 - 6,000m above sea level. This situation is expected to continue in the next 24 hours.
Local authorities recommend that people stay away from mountain crevices and high-risk areas, prepare necessities sufficient for 72 hours, comply with the instructions of functional agencies and proactively evacuate when necessary.
