On July 28 (local time), Mount Shiveluch on the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia's Far East, suddenly erupted, creating a column of ash rising to an altitude of about 7,500m above sea level.
According to TASS news agency, the above information was announced by the Kamchatka Branch of the Institute of Geophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences based on seismic data.
Based on seismic data, the ash column from Mount Shiveluch rose to an altitude of about 7,500m above sea level," the agency said on the messaging application Max.
This is Shiveluch's latest eruption of the day. Previously, this volcano also created a column of ash up to 9,000m above sea level.
According to the Kamchatka Volcano eruption Response Group (KVERT), this is one of the strongest eruptions of Shiveluch in recent times.
Volcanic ash columns thousands of meters high can affect aviation operations if they spread on flight routes. Therefore, specialized agencies in Russia regularly monitor Shiveluch's developments to promptly issue warnings when necessary.
Shiveluch is an active volcano located at the northernmost point of the Kamchatka peninsula, about 450km northeast of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The volcano is 3,283m above sea level, while the most active part, called Young Shiveluch, has a peak of about 2,500m and a crater of about 1.5km wide.
According to Russian scientists, Shiveluch experienced 2 particularly large eruptions in 1864 and 1964. At that time, a large part of the lava dome collapsed, creating streams of soil and rock and volcanic debris with significant destructive power in the surrounding area.
Shiveluch has maintained a state of continuous activity since September 1980 and is currently considered one of the most active volcanoes on the Kamchatka peninsula. Due to its high eruption frequency, this volcano is always on the list closely monitored by Russian scientists using seismic systems and remote observation.
To date, Russian authorities have not recorded any information about casualties or damage related to the latest eruption. Monitoring is still being maintained to assess the next developments of the volcano as well as the risks to aviation operations and surrounding areas.
