Israel speaks out on fate of Hezbollah's successor

Bùi Đức |

Amid international media speculation that Hezbollah's successor had been killed, Israel officially confirmed the news on October 8.

The Israeli military said Hezbollah's successor leader Hashem Safieddine was killed in an airstrike in the southern suburbs of Beirut (Lebanon) on October 6.

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah on October 8 was extremely intense. Israel mobilized the 146th Division to enter the Lebanese border to serve the ground campaign.

It is unclear how many troops are present on the Lebanese front line, but Reuters estimates there are about three divisions on the front, equivalent to thousands of people.

Later that evening, another airstrike hit the southern suburbs of Beirut. The Israeli military also announced the death of Suhail Hussein Husseini, Hezbollah's top commander in charge of transportation and finances.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah launched about 200 rockets across the Israeli border. The city of Haifa (Israel) was directly affected, many facilities were damaged, but there were no reports of casualties.

Israel began its ground operation in Lebanon on October 2. The Israeli military described the operation as localized and limited in nature, but its scope has been steadily expanding.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the main goal of the ground operation is to help tens of thousands of Israelis return home by completely eliminating Hezbollah's presence in the border area. The Israeli military has no intention of advancing deep into Lebanon, the IDF added.

Border clashes between Hezbollah and Israel have become increasingly tense and have occurred almost daily since the war in the Gaza Strip broke out on October 7, 2023. Hezbollah says its attacks are to show support for Hamas and protect the Palestinian people.
