RT reported that on March 20, after the meeting between EU leaders in Brussels ( Belgian) ended in a tense atmosphere, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared that the European Union (EU) really does not have enough resources to support Ukraine in the conflict with Russia.
Mr. Orban said that the EU's commitments to maintain the army, provide weapons and support the Ukrainian government are just "liquid promises" because according to him, the bloc is currently out of budget. The EU is without a single penny. They have spent all their money, Mr. Orban said.
Prime Minister Orban stressed that the conflict has damaged the economies of member countries, and called on Brussels to support US President Donald Trump's efforts to mediate between Russia and Ukraine.
Also on March 20, Hungary continued to refuse to participate in the EU's joint statement calling for increased aid to Ukraine. In an interview, Mr. Orban stated that it is impossible to form a common pro-war stance in Europe while Hungary is also a part of it.
According to RT, Hungary has repeatedly refused to block or delay military aid packages to Ukraine, arguing that the EU must avoid escalating tensions with Russia and focus on diplomatic measures to resolve the conflict.
This has prevented EU countries from reaching consensus on a 40 billion euro ($40 billion) additional military assistance package for Ukraine that the senior foreign policy representative, Kaja Kallas, has just proposed.
In addition to Hungary, Spain and Italy are said to have rejected Ms. Kallas' above aid plan because it is too expensive.
According to Politico, most European diplomats have criticized the aid package proposed by Kallas at a previous meeting on March 18 also in Brussels, calling it a bad plan.
Meanwhile, Euronews reported that some officials even declared the plan collapsed shortly after receiving little support from the 27 diplomats from member states attending the meeting.
