Mr. Trump called Russia a "package" while expressing his confidence that Ukraine will restore territorial integrity. Mr. Trump also believes that the EU and NATO are capable of helping Ukraine beat Russia in the current conflict. In addition, Mr. Trump urged NATO members in Europe to shoot down Russian aircraft if they violated their airspace and said he would punish Russia severely if Russia did not quickly move towards ending the conflict.
Those differences are all very basic, if not impossible, completely opposite to previous statements about Ukraine and Russia. Ukraine and its allies in Europe would love to hear such optimistic words from Mr. Trump. Not only is Mr. Trump's continued extreme thai do disadvantageous for Russia and beneficial for Ukraine and its political, psychological and media allies. For example, Mr. Trump did not mention Ukraine's acceptance of the transfer of territory to Russia, or Mr. Trump's determination to make things more difficult for Russia and increase support for Ukraine.
The problem is whether Mr. Trump says it in pairs with does it or not. Ukraine and its allies are excited on the outside but deep down do not really trust Mr. Trump and if there is optimism, they will only be very cautious. The reason is that Mr. Trump easily changes his views because he said that but did not attach any specific plan or strategy that could help Ukraine succeed. Mr. Trump's turn is no different from taking the US to the back and pushing Ukraine and its allies to the front.
