A Hercules C-130 transport aircraft of the Bolivian Air Force carrying newly printed banknotes skidded off the runway when landing, crashing into a crowded avenue near El Alto city airport, bordering the capital La Paz, killing at least 15 people and injuring about 30 others.
Firefighters confirmed the number of casualties after the accident that occurred on the evening of February 27 (local time). According to the Bolivian Ministry of Defense, the plane was transporting newly printed banknotes from the Central Bank of Bolivia to localities, but the specific number is unknown. The Central Bank plans to hold a press conference during the day to provide information about the incident.
Local authorities said the plane took off from the city of Santa Cruz. After landing at El Alto city airport, the plane skidded off the runway and rushed into a nearby avenue.
El Alto International Airport has temporarily closed after the accident. Images from local media show that the plane and many vehicles on the avenue were seriously damaged.
A video circulating on social networks recorded the chaotic scene when many people flocked to the scene, seemingly picking up banknotes scattered on the ground. Functional forces used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowd.
