The US military on the morning of June 11 (Vietnam time) launched attacks on many targets in Iran under the direction of President Donald Trump, amid escalating tensions between the two countries around the Strait of Hormuz.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said that the attacks were "supplementary self-defense" actions in response to what Washington described as continuous aggressive actions from Iran. According to CENTCOM's announcement on X social network, the operation targeted many targets on Iranian territory.
Mr. Trump told US media that Tomahawk missiles had attacked targets near Tehran.
Immediately after that, Iranian media reported on a series of explosions on the islands of Qeshm and Hengam, as well as locations in Sirik, Minab, Bandar Abbas and Gorfan. Iran's air defense system was activated in the western area of Tehran and outside the city of Fars.
Earlier, President Donald Trump said that the US had launched fierce attacks on Iran and would continue military operations. US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth also announced that the US would soon attack key Iranian facilities, while affirming that Washington is ready to take necessary measures to reach the agreement that the White House desires.
The airstrikes took place after a US helicopter was attacked by an Iranian drone, forcing the crew to land in the waters off Oman before being rescued about two hours later.
On the Iranian side, state media reported that the country's military targeted the US 5th Fleet headquarters in Bahrain in response to Washington's attacks. The Bahraini Ministry of Interior confirmed that an alarm has sounded in this country.
Iran also announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to all ships and said that clashes had occurred between US forces and naval units of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). However, CENTCOM denied this information, and affirmed that no US warships were hit and the Strait of Hormuz has not been blockaded.
According to state television IRIB, the latest US airstrikes have injured two residents in the city of Kargan, Hormozgan province by shrapnel.
Meanwhile, Iranian media denied Mr. Trump's statement that Iranian officials had contacted him directly to propose ending the attacks.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern about the risk of conflict re-emerging. Speaking at the Security Council, he said that the Middle East is getting deeper into crisis and recent developments show that the situation continues to worsen.
Despite increasing military tensions, CNN quoted sources as saying that negotiations between the US and Iran are still ongoing, in which a Qatar delegation met with Iranian negotiators in Tehran to narrow the remaining differences.
