US Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed that Washington is ready to promote dialogue to end the escalating tensions between Cambodia and Thailand.

On December 26, according to a statement from the US State Department, Secretary Marco Rubio had an important phone call with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. The discussion took place in the context of complicated developments in the border area between Cambodia and Thailand, attracting the attention of the international community.

Deputy Spokesperson Tommy pigott said that Secretary of State Rubio translated President Donald Trump's words, reiterating the White House's desire to maintain peace and stability in the region.

Notably, Mr. Rubio especially emphasized the importance of fully implementing the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement. This is considered an important legal basis for the two sides to resolve current disagreements.

The US Secretary of State also affirmed that Washington is ready to act as a bridge, supporting and promoting discussions between Phnom Penh and Bangkok to help the two neighbors soon stabilize the situation.

collisions in the border area began on December 7.

Previously, on December 12, US President Donald Trump also had talks with leaders of the two countries to encourage the parties to stop military activities and return to the negotiation table. However, the on-site situation still faces many challenges, requiring greater patience and efforts from relevant parties.

Cambodia said that the recent developments stemmed from misunderstandings and uncontrolled actions in sensitive areas, leading to unwanted collisions between forces on both sides.

In a positive development, the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently confirmed information about the high-level meeting of the Thailand - Cambodia Joint Border Committee (GBC). The meeting is scheduled to take place on December 27. This is considered the most practical step at the moment.

At the meeting, representatives of the two countries will directly discuss specific measures to establish a ceasefire and control the border situation. This move has also received warm welcome from ASEAN member countries, with the expectation that the direct dialogue mechanism will help the two neighbors quickly resolve disagreements for mutual development.
