An unnamed US official also confirmed that the US is conducting attacks inside Venezuelan territory, but did not provide further information about the developments.
Before the attack, US President Donald Trump had repeatedly mentioned conducting ground operations in Venezuela.
US attacks have caused many explosions shaking the capital Caracas and other areas of Venezuela. Attacks also took place in the states of Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira, according to information from the Venezuelan government.
According to witnesses and images circulating on social networks, explosions, planes and black smoke could be seen throughout the capital of Venezuela, starting at about 2 am on January 3, local time. The power outage affected the southern area of the city, near a large military base.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro had to declare a state of emergency and mobilize national defense forces after the US attack.
The Venezuelan government said that the goal of the US attack on Venezuela is related to the country's oil and minerals. Venezuela also affirmed that the US will not succeed with this intention.
