On September 22, TASS news agency reported that the US plans to put 2 more military bases into operation in Greenland under an agreement to be signed with Denmark.
According to sources, the US plans to restore a Cold War-era military base in southern Greenland and establish another base in the east, currently used by Danish dog tractor patrols.
The two locations mentioned are Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig.
Narsarsuaq was once the location of the US military base Bluie West One. After Washington closed this base in the 1950s, the population in Narsarsuaq decreased to only a few dozen people.
Meanwhile, Mestersvig is a military outpost currently used by a Danish special forces unit.
Denmark, Greenland and the United States are expected to sign a new agreement at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 22 (local time).
The above move takes place in the context of the US promoting the strengthening of its military presence in Greenland, an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark and strategically located in the Arctic.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that the US and Denmark had agreed to transfer security control in Greenland to Washington. Mr. Trump also said the US would immediately increase its military presence on this island.
According to sources, the agreement between the US and Denmark is expected to pave the way for Washington to use more military facilities in Greenland, in addition to the locations where the US military is already present.
