President Donald Trump on March 1 (US time) announced that the US military had destroyed and sunk 9 Iranian naval ships, and caused serious damage to the country's naval headquarters.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said that an Iranian Jamaran-class frigate was attacked as soon as the air strike campaign against Iran began. The ship is currently at the bottom of the Gulf of Oman at the Chah Bahar port.
Later, Mr. Trump wrote on social media that, according to information he received, US forces had destroyed and sunk a total of 9 Iranian naval ships. He said that some ships are large in size and play an important role, and affirmed that the US is continuing to target the remaining ships.
The head of the White House also said that the Iranian naval headquarters was attacked and largely destroyed, along with comments on the operational capabilities of this force.
The attack campaign launched by the US and Israel on Iran targeted defense facilities, intelligence, and many high-ranking officials and generals. CENTCOM said that B-2 bombers used bombs weighing more than 900kg to attack Iranian ballistic missiles.
Iran announced the launch of a retaliatory operation targeting Israeli territory and many US bases in Middle Eastern countries. Three US soldiers were killed and 5 seriously injured. Mr. Trump said he would retaliate against the soldiers and assessed that the operation in Iran could last 4-5 weeks.
According to the Iranian Red Crescent Society, at least 201 people have been killed and more than 700 injured across the country due to attacks by the US and Israel.
