According to The Guardian, the proposal is described as a creative approach to honor the American spirit and tradition of patriotism.
The program will include challenges based on the values and symbols of the United States, according to Tricia McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security. We need to rekindle patriotism and citizenship in this country, and we are ready to consider unique ideas, she said. However, she affirmed that this was only a proposal and had not been approved or rejected.
The idea comes as President Donald Trump is conducting a campaign to tighten immigration control. His policies affect illegal immigrants, legal residents, refugees and those waiting to have their files resolved. In some cases, children of US nationality were also deported to their illegal parents.
The TV show's creator was Rob Worsoff, a Canadian producer who worked for Duck Dynasty, a popular show with Trump's supporters. Mr. Worsoff said that the idea came from his own experience as a naturalized citizen. Some challenges in the program could include a NASA-themed missile assembly and launch competition, a San Francisco gold search competition, or a car assembly in Detroit.
The program will include 1-hour episodes, starting with the image of immigrants rowing a boat to Ellis Island - which used to be a historic gateway to immigration. The winner will be sworn in as a US citizen, while the loser will not be deported. This is not The Hunger Games for immigrants, Worsoff stressed.
The Ministry of Home Security said it has received hundreds of TV show proposals each year and all are carefully evaluated before deciding.
