A rare incident occurred on the evening of May 17 (local time) when the Mexico national defense training ship Cuauhtemoc suddenly crashed under the Brooklyn Bridge, right in the center of New York City, USA. According to CNN, there were 277 people on board at the time, of which 19 were injured, including 4 seriously injured cases.
In the video recorded and posted on social networks, the ship was glowing with lights, hanging a large Mexican flag, slowly leaving the wharf when its towering mast was straight into the bottom of the Brooklyn bridge, broken and poured into the deck. The sailors were thrilled, many people clung to the anchor to not fall. Below, the crowd of tourists shouted in panic, many people fled from the area.
New York police said the initial cause was likely due to a technical problem that caused the captain to lose control of the ship while moving under the Brooklyn Bridge.
As planned, the shipuhtemoc ship is leaving New York port to depart for Iceland, the incident occurred. The collision caused the Brooklyn Bridge to temporarily blockade for about 40 minutes, but after checking, the engineers confirmed that there was no structural damage to the historic bridge. At 22h48 (local time), the bridge was reopened.
The Cuauhtemoc is the pride of the Gulf of Mexico Navy - a famous training sailing ship that has visited many countries as a friendly diplomatic representative at sea.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Committee (NTSB) has begun an investigation. Meanwhile, the injured victims are being treated at New York Hospital, with no cases endangering their lives.
This is something that no one wants, but we are grateful for the quick response from the rescue team and hope the crew will recover soon, New York Mayor Eric Adams said at the scene.
