Sushila Karki, 73, became interim prime minister in Nepal after protests forced Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli had to resign.
President Ramchandra Paudel presided over the oath-taking ceremony for Ms. Karki at the presidential palace on September 12. The event was broadcast live.
The Nepalese presidential office said that new Prime Minister Karki was tasked with holding new House of Representatives elections before March 11, 2026. She plans to appoint ministers in the next few days.
On the night of September 12, the office of the President of Nepal announced that the President of Nepal had dissolved the National Assembly and that the country would hold elections in March 2026.
"According to the Prime Minister's proposal, the parliament has been dissolved. Election day is March 5, 2026," said Kiran Pokharel, a press advisor to the needs of the Neural president.
As the only woman to have held the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in Nepal, Ms. Karki was the priority choice of the protests.
She was supported by protests because of her reputation for honesty, integrity and strong anti-corruption stance.
She held the highest judicial position in Nepal for about a year until mid-2017.
