On the night of August 27 and early morning of August 28, Russian forces launched a large-scale attack by drones and missiles against Kiev, killing at least 10 people and injuring 38.
Ukrainian officials said many residential buildings and other facilities in seven districts of the city were severely damaged.
Mr Zelensky called the incident a testament to "Russia's response to diplomatic efforts" and called for new sanctions. "Russia chose missiles instead of negotiations," he said. Russia chooses to continue attacking rather than end the conflict." Among the dead victims was a child.
Kiev City authorities said rescue forces are still searching for people trapped under the rubble, while firefighters are trying to control many fires.
The airstrike warning lasted for more than 9 hours with a series of explosions brightening up the night sky, thick smoke and the continuous sound of drones.
The Ukrainian Air Force announced that it had shot down 563 out of a total of 598 drones and 26 out of 31 Russian missiles launched across the territory. However, they still recorded damage at 13 locations and 26 points of debris falling.
Mr. Tymur Tkachenko - head of the Kiev military force - said that Russia is carrying out attacks "combined, systematically, from many directions and targeting residential areas".
In Darnytskyi district, a 5-storey building was partially destroyed, rescue forces are still searching for survivors. A total of more than 20 locations in the capital had to deploy emergency response.
Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the country's air defense system shot down 102 Ukrainian drones over the same night, believed to have targeted at least seven areas.
