Governor of Belgorod region (Russia), Mr. Vyacheslav Gladkov, said that airstrikes from Ukraine on October 5 caused widespread power outages in the western part of Russia. Accordingly, about 40,000 residents lost power, while hospitals were forced to operate with generators to maintain operations.
At least three people, including a 10-year-old boy, were injured in Ukrainian drone attacks in the previous 24 hours, according to local authorities. The situation in the area is still being urgently controlled to restore power supply and ensure safety for people.
Ukraine said on the same day that the city of Lviv, near the border with Poland, also lost power due to fire from Russia, killing four civilians. The Russian Defense Ministry later announced that it had attacked Ukrainian arms factories and operating support energy systems. Moscow insists its forces are not for civilian purposes.
Reversal attacks on energy infrastructure between the two sides have been a regular occurrence since the fall of 2022, when Russia began focusing on Ukrainian energy facilities after the blast on the Crimean bridge killed four people. Observers say the drone and missile response has become part of both countries' spending strategy.
