Estimated 1,000m3 of buried rock and soil
Regarding the incident of a pickup truck carrying a hydropower plant manager and 2 people buried on National Highway 279, Lao Cai Province, on October 6, Nam Xe Commune Police informed that the search and rescue force is continuing to search for the last victim, Mr. Phung Van Tuan (45 years old, residing in Nam Xe Commune).

Although all the rocks and soil were leveled at the site of the landslide, the victim's body was still not found. The authorities are expanding the search area along Chan stream and neighboring areas, mobilizing more machinery and human resources to speed up the progress.

Previously, on September 29, Nam Xe Commune People's Committee received a report at around 7:30 a.m. the same day, Mr. Hoang Van Dinh (37 years old, Tu Tren - Nam Xe Hydropower Director) was driving a pickup truck with license plate 24A-348.02 carrying Phung Van Tuan and Mr. Hoang Duc Giang (35 years old, residing in Van Ban Commune).
After that, this car moved from Nam Xe commune via National Highway 279 towards Van Ban commune. At around 5:00 p.m. the same day, the family had completely lost contact with all 3 people in the car.
The police determined that the missing pickup truck passed through the gas station in Minh Luong commune on National Highway 279 at 7:56 a.m. on September 29.

However, just 4 minutes later, a serious landslide occurred in Pom Khen village (on the same route as National Highway 279). The landslide buried a road about 100m long with an estimated 1,000m3 of rock and soil.
By dawn on October 3, the authorities had taken the two bodies out of the car, Mr. Hoang Van Dinh and Mr. Hoang Duc Giang.

"I thought my child was just stuck somewhere because of the flood"
In a super-old stilt house nestled in the hillside of Giang village (Van Ban commune, Lao Cai province), Mrs. Hoang Thi Then (71 years old, mother of Mr. Hoang Duc Giang) sat voiceless, her eyes swollen, and her voice trembling: "Since I heard the news of my child on the car missing, I have not wanted to eat or drink anything. I thought I was just stuck somewhere because of the flood, the loss of phone signal...".

Mr. Hoang Dinh Duong (brother of victim Hoang Duc Giang) said that his family has 6 siblings, Giang is the 5th child. Everyone has their own families or works far away, only Giang lives with his parents. In 2018, his father passed away, Giang lived with her mother.
"Giang was born with poor health, and after 2 years in the hospital, he was resistant to medicine, and was sick all the time. Giang people are small and have poor health, so they cannot do heavy work. Therefore, despite the family's difficulties, the brothers and relatives still supported her younger sister to study electrical engineering. After graduating, he was recruited to Tu Tren - Nam Xe hydropower plant to work, everyone was happy. Thinking that from now on, Giang could stabilize her life and support her old mother, I thought," Mr. Duong sadly said.
According to Mr. Duong, Giang's health has been disadvantaged, and his love life has been even more difficult.
"Giang has 2 wives, but has not registered his marriage with anyone. They only lived together for a while and then left, the wife was raising a 2-year-old child. Giang is collecting money, planning to build a solid house for her mother to live in and then take her child back to raise at the end of this year. But that plan could not come true forever," Mr. Duong choked up.

Mr. Vu Xuan Thuy, Chairman of Van Ban Commune People's Committee - said: "When we heard the news, we sent staff to encourage and support the family in completing burial procedures. Mr. Giang's situation is truly unfortunate - he is both a main breadwinner and takes care of his elderly mother."
