Russia declares it does not accept armedization of the Arctic, ready to respond

Any unilateral moves to increase military activity in the Arctic will lead to retaliatory measures from Russia.

Speaking at a reception at the Russian Embassy on the occasion of Russian National Day, Russian Ambassador to Canada Oleg Stepanov emphasized: "The Arctic has a special place in our lives. Russia is the largest Arctic power. We consider the Arctic regions to be a region of peace, sustainable development and cooperation. We believe that this place must continue to be a space with a low level of tension and constructive development, serving the interests of all Arctic nations. Therefore, we regret the efforts of some countries to militarize the Far North.

The Russian diplomat said that this approach does not help strengthen security.

Any unilateral increase in military presence will inevitably create corresponding retaliatory steps," Mr. Stepanov warned.

He emphasized that Russia is not seeking confrontation and is ready to cooperate in developing transport routes, ensuring maritime safety, protecting the environment as well as preserving the lifestyle of indigenous communities.

The Russian Ambassador also expressed hope that the Arctic Council in the future will return to its role as the key coordination mechanism of the region.

Also in his speech, Russian Ambassador to Canada Oleg Stepanov said that global politics is currently undergoing breakthrough changes and these changes are in Russia's interests.

We are witnessing and participating in truly breakthrough changes in world politics. In front of us, a more complex, diverse and hopefully fairer international order is gradually taking shape," he said.

He believes that more and more countries want to decide their own destiny, shape their future and choose their own development path based on national interests, historical experience and cultural identity.

These changes are in Russia's interests. Our country welcomes them with confidence, as a country - a unique civilization, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and one of the pillars of the multipolar world" - the Russian diplomat said.

He affirmed that Russia always supports stability and predictability in international relations, while upholding the principles of international law supremacy and the United Nations Charter.

He also said that Russia supports equal dialogue between international actors, respects sovereignty and does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries.
