Serhii Kuznietsov, a Ukrainian citizen arrested in Italy on suspicion of involvement in the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, continues to fast and is in critical health. This information has just been announced by Ukrainian National Assembly Member for Human Rights (Ombudsman), Mr. Dmytro Lubinets on Telegram.
Mr. Lubinets said that during a meeting with Halyna Kuznietsova - Kuznietsov's wife, she confirmed that her husband was still hungry and his health was in danger.
This situation requires immediate action. I have directly supervised the incident and some specific steps have been taken, Mr. Lubinets emphasized.
Ukrainian National Assembly member for Human Rights has sent an official letter to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, the Italian Ministry of Justice, Vice President of the European Parliament Pina Picierno, Italian and Lazio region human rights expert Marino Fardelli, as well as the rights protection agency for those detained in Italy, requesting to ensure basic rights for Kuznietsov.
Advisor Oleksandr Horodetskyi of the Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner working in Italy, who participated in protests demanding proper detention conditions for the Ukrainian citizen, ensured he was provided with immediately needed medicine and food. Mr. Horodetskyi also directly forwarded Mr. Lubinets' letter to the Italian Ministry of Justice.
The Ukrainian human rights committee emphasized: "We must do everything to protect the rights of this Ukrainian citizen. Detention of Serhii in a high-security prison on inappropriate conditions is unacceptable and violates the Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Rights.
Kuznietsov had previously declared a state of emergency in a high- security prison in Italy, where he was detained on suspicion of sabotage in Nord Stream.
The Nord Stream-related incident stems from explosions in 2022 on two key gas pipelines carrying Russian gas to Europe, causing a huge leak of methane gas into the Baltic Sea and disrupting regional energy supplies.
This is considered one of the most serious geopolitical events related to European energy security, with many theories about the culprit being made but no official conclusions have been reached. Serhii Kuznietsov was arrested by Italy on charges of being involved in the sabotage plot.
