A serious explosion occurred at the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi shopping center in Taichung city (Taiwan, China), killing at least 5 people, according to information from authorities.
TVBS Taiwan reported that the explosion occurred in the food court on the 12th floor of the building, injuring 24 others. The Taiwan Fire Department (China) said that rescue forces mobilized 56 vehicles and 136 personnel to search and rescue the victims. The area was said to be under construction when the incident occurred.
Video posted by TVBS Taiwan captured the moment the explosion occurred, showing panels and debris flying from the building, with smoke and dust billowing into the air. Images from the scene showed debris scattered across the street.
Taichung Mayor Lu Xiu-dian said the explosion had caused widespread damage and rescue efforts were still ongoing. "I was working at the city government building at around 11:30 a.m. when I felt the tremors caused by the explosion. The incident was very serious," she said.
The cause of the explosion is still unknown. The Fire Department said an investigation is underway and urged people to stay away from the area for their safety. Some of the victims were passersby.
"This area has many office buildings and residential areas. We urge everyone to comply with the restrictions to ensure safety," local authorities warned.
