Early on September 30 (local time), the Israeli army attacked the center of the capital Beirut, damaging a residential building. This is the first time Israel has attacked Beirut since the conflict with Hezbollah last year, according to AP.
After about an hour, Israel continued to attack other targets across Lebanon, killing a series of Hezbollah soldiers.
Video footage from the scene showed ambulances rushing to the bombed building after the Israeli airstrike. Crowds gathered around the scene of the attack, filling a Sunni street in the capital Beirut.
The Lebanese Civil Defense said the airstrike killed at least one person and injured 16. The victim was identified as a member of the Islamist group al-Jamaa al-Islamiya.
The organization's role in the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah remains unclear.
According to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a member of this organization in Lebanon was also killed after the airstrike. This is the third time the Israeli army has killed a PFLP member.
In the past week, Israel has repeatedly targeted the southern suburbs of Beirut, where Hezbollah soldiers have a heavy presence, most notably an airstrike that killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on September 27.
In addition to Nasrallah, the September 27 airstrike in Lebanon also killed about 20 Hezbollah soldiers and another senior commander named Ali Karaki.
When confirming the death of leader Nasrallah on September 28, Hezbollah also said that a seventh senior leader, Nabil Kaouk, had died several weeks earlier.
