On April 3, Mr. Min Aung Hlaing - head of the Myanmar military government - was elected president of this country in a vote in the National Assembly.
Vote counting results showed that Mr. Min Aung Hlaing received at least 293 votes of support out of a total of 584 votes, exceeding the necessary majority.
Previously, on March 31, members of the House of Representatives (Pyithu Hluttaw) and the Senate (Amyotha Hluttaw) elected Mr. Min Aung Hlaing and Ms. Nan Ni Ni Aye as Vice Presidents.
This move thereby paves the way for Mr. Min Aung Hlaing to continue to rule under the civil name.
Previously, Mr. Min Aung Hlaing was a general. Mr. Min Aung Hlaing has run the country since the government of Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi was overthrown in 2021.
According to the Myanmar Constitution, Mr. Min Aung Hlaing must resign from his military positions if he becomes president.
