On January 30, according to local media, the Party backed by the Myanmar military won overwhelmingly in the country's 3-stage general election, consolidating the results that had been predicted in advance after a tightly controlled political process.
The Union for Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) dominated all 3 voting stages, winning an absolute majority in Myanmar's two legislative houses.
This party won 232/263 seats in the Pyithu Hluttaw House of Representatives and 109/157 seats announced to date in the Amyotha Hluttaw Senate, according to results announced on January 29 and 30.
The Myanmar parliament is scheduled to meet in March to elect a president, while the new government will take over power in April, according to military government spokesman Zaw Min Tun.
The final round of voting at the end of January closed the election that started on December 28, more than 4 years after the military staged a coup, overthrowing the democratic government of Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi.
Myanmar has fallen into a political crisis since the coup in 2021. According to the United Nations, about 3.6 million people have been displaced.
