This is considered a way to take advantage of the skills and experience of prisoners to contribute to reform activities.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Shane Kanjanapach - Deputy Director and Spokesperson of the Thai correction Department, Mr. Thaksin is currently in a 5-day quarantine period according to regulations. After that, prisoners will be assigned work based on their personal abilities and preferences. In Mr. Thaksin's case, the agency plans to arrange foreign language teaching to support educational activities in the camp.
The spokesperson also said that Mr. Thaksin's physical and mental health are at a normal level. During his isolation, he maintained the habit of eating breakfast with 2 boiled eggs and coffee, sleeping stably, without making any special requests. He was arranged in the same room as a number of other elderly prisoners, which was considered appropriate.
No one has been allowed to visit Mr. Thaksin, including lawyers. The list of visits for a maximum of 10 people will be registered by him, including his wife, children and relatives, in accordance with the prison's regulations.
Lawyer Winyat Chatmontree confirmed that he could not have direct contact with the customer due to the quarantine period, but said that Mr. Thaksin was still healthy and in good spirits.
A source from the Department of correction revealed that to ensure safety, the prison has assigned a number of prisoners with good "quality" as "supporters" for Mr. Thaksin. These people are trained in first aid and some other skills, to reduce risks and support daily activities.
According to the source, thanks to his professional foundation, especially in the economic field, there are opinions that Klong prem prison can consider including Mr. Thaksin in community service activities, such as sharing knowledge at book fair. However, all such plans must be approved by the Department of Training in advance.
Regarding the possibility of amnesty or reduction of sentences, the Department of Education and Training emphasized that this depends on the reform process. With a 1-year sentence, Mr. Thaksin can be considered for early release if he maintains a good classification or higher.
Outstanding reformed prisoners can be considered when they have 4 months to serve their sentences; reformed very well when they have 3 months; and reformed well when they have about 2 and a half months left.
Thaksin has now entered the early days of adapting to the prison environment. According to an internal source, he slept well, did not show any stress or anxiety, and fully cooperated with the staff. This makes observers think that he is adapting quite quickly to the new life behind the scenes.
