The US presidential election is just over two weeks away, and Republican candidate Donald Trump has chosen a McDonald's fast food restaurant as a campaign location, while Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate, attended services at two churches in the state of Georgia (USA).
At a McDonald's in suburban Philadelphia, Mr. Trump stripped off his suit jacket, donned a black and yellow apron, and cooked French fries himself — a job he admitted he had "wanted to do all my life." The former president dipped baskets of potatoes in hot oil, sprinkled them with salt, and handed them to customers at the service window himself. Thousands of people gathered outside the store to watch the spectacle.
The McDonald's visit is also said to have targeted Ms Harris, who has said she worked at the chain during her college years in California. Mr Trump has dismissed Ms Harris's claims without providing any evidence.
Ms Harris's spokesman, Ian Sams, responded that Mr Trump's actions were simply a sign of his "desperation".
Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris celebrated her 60th birthday by attending religious services at two churches in Georgia. At Divine Faith Ministries International Church in Jonesboro, Georgia, music legend Stevie Wonder performed his hit song “Higher Ground” and his version of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song.” Harris said she fulfilled a “big dream” by having Stevie Wonder sing “Happy Birthday” to her.
Earlier, Ms. Harris also spoke at the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Stonecrest, Georgia. She spoke about the division and tension in society, although she did not directly mention Mr. Trump by name.
“Right now, across our country, we see people trying to divide us, to sow hatred and to stoke fear,” Harris said. “Our country is at a crossroads, and the direction we take will be up to us.”
Mr Trump, while campaigning in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, sent birthday wishes to Ms Harris, although his crowd responded with boos.
“Happy birthday, and many more years to come,” Mr. Trump said, though he then went on to criticize Ms. Harris’s policies and question her cognitive abilities.
Ms Harris will continue her campaign alongside former Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney in suburban areas in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.
