Australian airline fined 90 million AUD for illegal dismissal of employee

The Australian Federal Court has imposed a record fine on Qantas after years of legal dispute.

The Australian Federal Court has decided to fine Qantas Airline AUD of VND90 million, equivalent to more than VND1,540 billion, for the illegal dismissal of 1,800 employees during the COVID-19 pandemic. This decision is considered the end of the persistent legal battle between Qantas and labor unions.

According to the verdict, the fine was divided into two parts: 50 million AUD (854 billion VND) transferred to the Transport Workers' Union and 40 million AUD (684 billion VND) was retained to pay for former employees in the future. Australian Federal Court Judge Michael Lee stressed that this is a real deterrent for businesses that may be tempted by financial interests in violation of labor law.

In August 2020, amid the context of blocking and closing the border without an epidemic vaccine, Qantas decided to lay off 1,800 employees and replace them with outpatient services. The Federal Court later concluded that the decision was illegal and rejected Qantas's appeal.

Qantas, known as the "Spirit of Australia", has been active for more than a century. However, the airline's reputation has been seriously damaged by consecutive controversial incidents, including high ticket prices, poor service and seat sales on canceled flights.

Ms. Vanessa Hudson, CEO of Qantas since 2023, promises to improve customer experience and enhance the brand's image. She replaced Alan Joyce, who left the position earlier than expected amid criticism of Qantas's treatment of staff and passengers, despite the company still reporting big profits to shareholders.
