Bridge over the second largest river in China collapsed, at least 12 people died

At least 12 people have died and four are missing after part of a bridge under construction collapsed in northwestern China on August 22.

The video released by China's state broadcaster CCTV shows the middle part of the bridge arch suddenly collapsing into the Hoang Ha River.

According to Xinhua News Agency, the cause of the bridge collapse was a steel cable incident.

Nhan Dan newspaper reported that there were 15 workers and 1 project manager present at the scene at the time of the bridge collapse.

The initial death toll in the accident was announced at 7 people, after which Chinese state television announced the death toll at 12 people.

CCTV reported that at least 91 rescue vehicles, including 27 boats, 1 helicopter and 5 robots, along with 806 personnel, were deployed to support the search and rescue. Six hospitals in the area are ready to receive treatment for the victims.

According to Nhan Dan newspaper, the collapsed bridge was located on the Tu Xuyen - Thanh Hai railway line. This is a steel truss arch bridge connecting the two largest railway lines in the world.

The bridge that just had an incident is also China's first steel truss arch bridge across the Hoang Ha River - the second longest river in the country.
