The latest storm news on February 24th from the US Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) said that the strongest wind of Super Typhoon Horacio is at 259 km/h.
With this intensity, Horacio reached the highest level according to the Saffir-Simpson scale (the storm classification scale used by the US).
Currently, the storm is moving south-southwest over the sea east of Madagascar island.
Satellite images show that Horacio has a compact, highly symmetrical structure with a clear eye of the storm, a characteristic sign of a very strong storm.
JTWC storm forecasters believe that the atmospheric environment is still very favorable for storms to maintain intensity, including warm sea surface temperatures, low vertical wind shear, and strong upper-level airflows.
The Mauritius Meteorological Agency issued a high wave warning to Rodrigues Island from 4:30 am on February 24 (local time). The high wave warning due to the impact of the first super typhoon of 2026 is effective until the morning of February 25.
Rodrigues is a small island in the Republic of Mauritius, about 560km east of the main island.
According to storm forecasters, waves created by super typhoon Horacio could reach up to 7m high. Large waves are also affecting lagoons and may overflow into low coastal areas, especially during high tides.
Faced with the impact of the first super typhoon of the 2026 storm season, Mauritian authorities recommend that fishermen, seafarers and people do not go out to sea or approach beaches when dangerous rough seas conditions continue.
