Syria sentences former President Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia

    A Syrian court on August 11 sentenced former President Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia.

    The absent death sentence was announced after former President Bashar al-Assad was charged with "war crimes" and "crimes against humanity" in the Syrian civil war.

    The sentence for Mr. Assad is the first sentence under the transitional government of Syria. This year, the new government in Syria has begun to prosecute both directly and in absentia with figures of the old government.

    Former President Bashar al-Assad and his family arrived in Moscow, Russia in December 2024.

    Also on August 11, a court in Syria sentenced Atif Najib - an Assad-era official to death for "crimes against humanity" committed when he was in charge of political security in Daraa province - the cradle of Syria's 2011 uprising.

    Mr. Najib is a cousin of former President Bashar al-Assad. He was arrested in January last year on charges including murder, "intentionally killing children under 15 years old" and "torture leading to death".

    The court ruled that Atif Najib's alleged acts were "crimes against humanity" and sentenced him to the heaviest sentence - the death penalty.
