The German Armored Brigade No. 45 deployed to Lithuania main tanks Leopard 2A8 and PzH 2000 self-propelled artillery to increase forces on the eastern flank of NATO.
General Christoph Huber, Commander of the 45th Armored Brigade, said that equipping heavy artillery is of utmost importance to the unit and affirmed that the force will carry the Leopard 2A8 tank when deployed.
In addition to the Leopard 2A8 and PzH 2000, the Brigade also brought to Lithuania Puma 1 infantry fighting vehicle, unmanned aerial vehicles and air defense systems.
The deployment of a complete Brigade to Lithuania is considered a turning point for Germany, because since World War II, the country has limited the deployment of large-scale forces abroad. The Brigade is expected to reach full combat strength with 4,800 soldiers by 2027.
The Leopard 2A8 - manufactured by KNDS Germany - is described as a leap in combat capability compared to previous models. The tank is equipped with a Trophy active defense system, capable of detecting and intercepting anti-ship missiles or drones. The artillery turret and sensing system have both been upgraded to increase survival on the battlefield.
General Huber stressed that Germany must add new equipment based on the experience drawn from the Ukrainian conflict. He said that Leopard 2 will allow units to deploy mobile warfare, cooperation and quickly take the initiative. Although expensive armored vehicles are at risk of being attacked by cheap drones, many NATO member states still consider tanks a necessary combat vehicle and are constantly investing in new tank technology.
The deployment of German heavy forces to Lithuania reflects a commitment to enhancing security on the eastern flank of NATO and efforts to enhance collective defense capabilities. The presence of Leopard 2A8 and PzH 2000 is expected to both deter and enhance the alliance's quick response to regional security challenges.
