A container ship carrying 17 sailors was attacked in the Gulf of Oman, forcing the crew to send an emergency signal and prepare to abandon the ship.

A container ship was attacked in the Gulf of Oman on August 11, causing the crew to signal for help and prepare to leave the ship, according to Xinhua news agency.

The incident occurred in the eastern area of the Gulf of Oman. According to information exchanged by radio between ships operating in the area, the targeted ship was identified as Vela Nova, a container ship carrying 17 crew members.

According to sources, the ship is believed to have been attacked by a helicopter. There is currently no detailed information about the identity of the forces carrying out the attack, the cause as well as the extent of damage to the ship and crew.

On the same day, the UK Maritime Trade Organization (UKMTO) issued a warning, confirming an incident involving a container ship and military forces in the Gulf of Oman.

UKMTO did not provide more details about the developments of the incident. However, the agency recommends that ships operating in the area regularly update the latest maritime security warnings and closely monitor the developments of the combat situation.

UKMTO said that relevant authorities have been notified and an investigation into the incident is underway.

Oman Bay is an important maritime route connecting the Arabian Sea with the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf region. This area plays a special role in international freight and energy transportation. Therefore, maritime security incidents here can affect the operation of commercial ships as well as increase concerns about maritime safety.

The attack on the Vela Nova continues to attract the attention of the maritime community in the context that commercial ships are required to be more vigilant when moving through areas with complex security situations.
