Iran reveals new regulations for ships passing through Hormuz, possibly with special preferences for some countries

Iran said the new law on the management of the Ormuz Strait does not specifically name any country, but incentives for Russia may be negotiated separately.

On August 11, according to TASS news agency, Iranian MP Abolfazl Zohrevand said that the new law on the management of the Ormuz Strait does not specifically mention any country. However, issues related to exemptions or preferences for Russia can be resolved through bilateral agreements.

This issue can certainly be resolved and coordinated within the framework of bilateral relations or joint agreements with Russia, China or any other country, depending on the conditions," said Zohrevand, a member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian Parliament.

According to Iranian MPs, the bill is built comprehensively, without setting specific regulations for a specific country or region.

Our bill is comprehensive, meaning it does not address any specific country or region," Zohrevand emphasized.

This statement was made in the context of Iran discussing the management of maritime activities through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic maritime route connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman.

Previously, on August 6, Fars news agency reported, citing an Iranian diplomat, that Iran and Oman were discussing the application of transit fees for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

According to sources, the fee will depend on the services provided by Iran and Oman to ships passing through this sea route. However, the published information does not specify the expected fee or when this mechanism may be applied.

In a new statement, Mr. Zohrevand did not specify how the bill would stipulate the transit fee. He also did not specify the conditions for a country to be exempted or enjoy incentives.

Instead, the Iranian MP said that specific issues for each country can be resolved through bilateral agreements. This means that the general provisions in the bill can be widely applied, while special mechanisms can be negotiated separately between Tehran and partners.

Russia and China were mentioned by Mr. Zohrevand as examples of countries that can resolve related issues through bilateral relations with Iran. However, he did not confirm any specific exemptions or preferences have been signed.

Thus, Iran's new bill is now described as a common framework for operations across the Strait of Hormuz, while issues related to each country can continue to be handled through separate agreements.
