Spain completes installation of floating barriers at sea

Spain has completed the deployment of a floating fence at sea along the maritime border of the land of Ceuta.

Spain on August 2 (local time) completed the deployment of a floating barrier at sea along the maritime border of the land of Ceuta in North Africa, as authorities continue to tighten border control after a recent massive migration from Morocco.

The floating fence installed off Tarajal beach of Ceuta is now fully operational. This measure is designed to prevent illegal sea crossing activities, after tens of thousands of migrants entered this territory in recent days.

Spanish authorities also said that the official death toll related to the crisis has increased to 72. Although the wave of large-scale illegal immigration has subsided, Ceuta has not yet returned to normal.

Police and military forces continued security operations throughout the city, arresting migrants discovered on the streets. Those arrested were taken to police stations for identification before initiating deportation procedures.

The massive migration has become one of the most serious border crises in recent history of Spain, prompting the country's government to impose emergency measures and sparking a new debate across Europe on migration management and the protection of the European Union's outer borders.
