On December 12, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said he would have a phone call with US President Donald Trump later in the day, as the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia dragged on to the 5th day.
Anutin told reporters that the call was set at around 9:20 p.m. on December 12 local time, while the conflict was still at many points along the 817km border.
Prime Minister Anutin said the phone call with President Trump would be an opportunity to update the latest developments along the current border.
In the face of the current conflict, Mr. Trump expressed his desire to continue intervene to prevent war and restore the ceasefire agreement he had mediated before.
Speaking on the evening of December 11, Mr. Trump emphasized his role in peacekeeping and expressed confidence that he could bring the ceasefire process "back to orbit". He said he has resolved eight conflicts and is preparing to make further calls with the leaders of the two countries to find a way to end the conflict.
Thai and Cambodian forces clashed in many positions, marking the most intense period since the five-day war in July, which ended after Mr Trump's intervention calls.
The phone call between Mr. Anutin and Mr. Trump is expected to open up opportunities to curb the conflict, as efforts to re-establish peace become urgent as casualties increase rapidly and the humanitarian situation worsens along the border between the two countries.
