China operates world's largest pumped storage hydropower plant

The world's largest pumped-storage hydropower plant in China officially went into full operation on December 31, 2024.

The Fengning pumped-storage hydropower plant is located in Chengde City, Hebei Province, northern China, and is operated by the State Grid Corporation of China. The plant has a total installed capacity of 3.6 million kilowatts, with the ability to produce 6.61 billion kilowatt hours of electricity per year, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Since the first units began operating in 2021, the plant has produced approximately 8.62 billion kilowatt hours of electricity, making an important contribution to stabilizing the country's renewable energy supply.

As a leading renewable energy storage technology, pumped storage hydropower is playing a key role in China's green energy transition.

The Fengning plant is expected to save 480,800 tons of standard coal and reduce 1.2 million tons of CO2 emissions per year, making an important contribution to China's goals of improving energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
