Japanese reconnaissance UAV worth more than 120 million USD missing

    The Japanese military is searching for one of the three Global Hawk long-range reconnaissance UAVs after the plane lost contact off the west coast of the country.

    According to AFP, the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (ASDF) said that the RQ-4B Global Hawk aircraft lost contact at about 1 pm on September 15 (local time), in an area about 50km north of the coast of Tottori prefecture.

    General Takehiro Morita - the highest-ranking officer of the ASDF said that search operations are being carried out with the participation of ASDF aircraft along with ships and aircraft of the Maritime Self-Defense Force. At the same time, he confirmed that the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) did not conduct a training flight at that time.

    During the search, the Japan Coast Guard discovered an object believed to be part of the plane off Tottori prefecture. However, the origin of this part is currently undetermined.

    Global Hawk is a large reconnaissance UAV and is not equipped with weapons. Manufactured by Northrop Grumman Corporation, this equipment worth more than 120 million USD is 14.5m long with a characteristic bulging nose, creating a shape like a whale.

    According to the Japanese Ministry of Defense, this country currently operates 3 Global Hawks.
