Sweden will transfer 16 used Gripen C/D fighter jets to Ukraine in the form of military aid, and also provide 16 new generation Gripen E fighter jets under a separate procurement contract. The information was announced by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, according to TASS.
Ukraine is buying new generation Gripen fighter jets, i.e. the E-generation Gripen version. We have signed an agreement to supply 16 aircraft. At the same time, Sweden also provides 16 more used fighter jets. Thus, the total number of aircraft to be transferred will be 32," he said.
According to Prime Minister Kristersson, continuing to support Ukraine is Sweden's top priority. He emphasized the importance of Western support for Ukraine and called on countries to increase aid to Kiev.
Previously, Saab Group announced on June 30 about signing a contract with the Swedish Defense Instruments Agency (FMV) to supply 16 Gripen E fighters to Ukraine.
The contract is worth about 24.6 billion Swedish krona (equivalent to about 2.54 billion USD) and is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2026. The handover of Gripen E fighters will take place in the period 2029-2030.
According to the plan announced earlier, Sweden will begin transferring Gripen C/D fighters to Ukraine in early 2027.
