The shooting occurred on April 18. The suspect, identified by Ukrainian Attorney General Ruslan Kravchenko as a 58-year-old man born in Moscow, has also died.
Authorities are trying to determine the context as well as the motive of the shooting. Ukrainian authorities are investigating the incident as "terrorist acts," Kravchenko said.
Attorney General Kravchenko said that the man opened fire on a street in the Holosiivskyi district of Kiev, killing 4 people, then barricaded himself inside a supermarket, killing another person and taking hostages.
Preliminary reports show that the suspect used an automatic rifle, which is a registered rifle.
According to Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko, another person shot by the attacker died at the hospital. Nine others are being treated at the hospital and 6 others are being given first aid on the spot by medical staff.
A police hostage negotiator, Valeriia, shared: "We arrived at the scene after receiving the call and learned that an armed man was inside the Velmart supermarket. A special operation was launched, in which I talked to him for 40 minutes. He had no contact for those 40 minutes.
Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said that after 40 minutes passed and the shooter did not respond, special forces of the Rapid Response Unit of the Ukrainian National Police rushed into the supermarket. The shooting suspect shot at police officers in an attempt to arrest them and was eliminated.
Mass shootings are very rare in Ukraine even though the people of this country possess many weapons. There have been no similar incidents since the Russia-Ukraine conflict broke out in 2022.
