Vietnamese volleyball needs long-term investment

Hoài Việt |

Vietnamese volleyball (both men's and women's teams) sets big goals at SEA Games, ASIAD, but needs a long-term investment strategy for sustainable development.

Reality from SEA Games 33

The two Vietnamese men's and women's volleyball teams participated in SEA Games 33 with a squad determined to be capable of competing for the Gold Medal. However, at the end of the above Games, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team continued to win the Silver Medal while the Vietnamese men's volleyball team only ranked 4th.

In 2026, the Vietnam Volleyball Federation will continue to train national teams. From May 25, 14 players of the Vietnamese Women's Volleyball Team will gather. Meanwhile, 18 players of the Vietnamese Men's Volleyball Team have started gathering for training. The two Vietnamese men's and women's volleyball teams will build forces to prepare for the immediate goal of winning the Gold Medal at SEA Games 34 in 2027.

The reality of competition at SEA Games 33 shows that the Vietnamese men's and women's volleyball teams have a force of players at their peak level. However, at this time, the renovation of the force by adding young players is considered in the new stage. Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet does not hide his intention to choose many young people to prepare for the future.

In the immediate future, he will only have time to gather 14 female players in the first phase of 2026 to perform the task of AVC Cup 2026. Then in mid-June, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team plans to propose adding more training players to have a force of more than 20 athletes. This will be in-depth preparation.

The Vietnam U18 women's team is training at this time. It is not ruled out that some players of the Vietnam U18 women's player generation will be added to the Vietnamese women's volleyball team after completing their tasks at the 2026 AFC U18 Women's Championship.

Long-term goals must take at least 5 years

The direct goal of the Vietnamese women's volleyball team this year is to defend 4th place at the 2026 Asian Championship and 4th place at ASIAD 20. The Vietnamese men's volleyball team will strive for the best results at SEA V.League 2026 and can participate in ASIAD 20.

At the 8th Congress of the Vietnam Volleyball Federation (2026-2031), Chairman Duong Manh Tien of the Federation expressed that the Executive Committee of the new term and the professional department will focus on developing Vietnamese volleyball more strongly, especially the international achievements of each national team must be effective. At least in the next 5 years, Vietnamese volleyball will have the opportunity to go through many major arenas, respectively SEA Games 34, 35, 36 and ASIAD 20 in 2026, ASIAD 21 in 2030.

At SEA Games 34, 1 of the 2 Vietnamese men's and women's volleyball teams strives to achieve Gold Medals; ASIAD 20 in 2026, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team ranks in the top 4, the Vietnamese men's volleyball team ranks in the top 8; At the Asian Championship, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team strives to rank in the top 3 to win the right to participate in the VNL World Championship", the goal set for the training and coaching work of the Vietnam Volleyball Federation for term 8.

To realize this goal, national volleyball teams must receive synchronous investment from selecting good players, ensuring long-term development with large resources and combining science, technology, and biomedicine to support training.

In Southeast Asia, through many stages, countries such as Thailand, Philippines or Indonesia have had many professional preparation programs for each national men's and women's volleyball team. There, your volleyball background sets specific goals for focused investment. At the same time, your volleyball federations determine that force preparation must ensure a long-term roadmap of 5 years or more before achieving results.

Vietnamese volleyball has formed specific achievement goals and to win the leading position in Southeast Asia, learning more from other volleyball backgrounds in the region will be useful to help us develop training programs.
