On August 12, Thai police followed and raided drug trafficking convoys in Chiangmai. Searching the operation office of this ring, the authorities discovered a large amount of crystal meth, heroin, etc.
After breaking up a large drug ring, the police also arrested many subjects, including one who is the president of a professional football club competing in the Thai League 2 tournament (a tournament behind the national championship).
The media in the Golden Temple revealed that to legalize illegal income from drug trafficking, the leaders "laundered money" by buying this team. In addition, there are other forms such as buying villas, supercars, jewelry, ... with a total value of about 100 million baht (equivalent to 70 billion VND).
"The person arrested is the president of a famous club in the North. This person does not hesitate to spend money to recruit famous Thai players as well as quality foreign players with the ambition of taking the home team to the next level," SMM Sport reported.
Immediately after receiving the information, the representative of the Thai Football Federation said that it would soon organize a meeting between organizers to discuss, evaluate the level and consider whether this club should continue to compete in Thai League 2 or not. All will be discussed specifically after the official conclusion of the Thai police.
This is not the first time Thai football has been stirred up by drug-related incidents. In March 2021, former striker Natthaphol Chansuriwong of Songkhla United club was arrested with evidence of 1,698 synthetic drug pills and 5.1 grams of crystal meth.
