Before the 2024 Vietnam Golden Ball award ceremony, many fans expressed their concerns about Nguyen Xuan Son not being nominated for the 2024 Golden Ball for men, even though he is a Vietnamese citizen and has made a great contribution to the Vietnam National Team at the 2024 ASEAN Cup.
In theory, Nguyen Xuan Son is officially a Vietnamese citizen, however, the reason he is not on the nomination list is because of the award's regulations. Xuan Son had an impressive season with 31 goals in the V.League and was the one who carried Nam Dinh club to the championship. He is also on the list of top strikers in the world in 2024.
At the Vietnam National Team level, although Xuan Son was naturalized at the last minute and played in the final match of the group stage against Myanmar, he left a deep impression, scoring 7 goals and having 2 assists. It is undeniable that Xuan Son's role is extremely important, contributing to bringing the Vietnam National Team to the final and being crowned at the ASEAN Cup 2024.
However, despite his impressive achievements, the organizing committee decided to follow the regulations by not including Nguyen Xuan Son in the nomination list for the 2024 Vietnam Men's Golden Ball. The reason is that for most of 2024, he will still play as a foreign player.
