After helping the Brazilian team defeat Japan with a score of 2-1 to win the right to enter the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, striker Matheus Cunha created a wave of debate because of his celebration towards the stands with many opposing fans.
Right after the final whistle at NRG stadium (Houston, USA), when the Brazilian players were sharing joy with the fans, Cunha walked towards an area with many Japanese fans. The number 9 striker raised all 5 fingers, while pointing to the national emblem on his chest and continuously said in English: "We have 5 championships".
This action is understood by many as a mention of Brazil's 5-time World Cup championship achievement - the most record in the history of the tournament. However, directing this gesture towards the Japanese fans' stands has led many opinions to think that this is an unrestrained and provocative action after the match.
According to Brazilian media, Cunha's celebration only took place for a short time before a member of the coaching staff took the striker out of the stands to avoid tension.
Some sources in Brazil believe that Cunha's reaction may stem from the pre-match statements of Japanese striker Kento Shiogai. This striker once said that Brazil no longer maintains its strength as before, and assessed that France and Argentina are the top candidates for the 2026 World Cup championship.
On the pitch, Brazil had a difficult match against the Asian representative. Japan unexpectedly opened the score in the first half thanks to Sano, putting coach Carlo Ancelotti's team at risk of stopping.
Stepping into the second half, Brazil increased the pressure and found an equalizer scored by Casemiro after a header. In injury time, Gabriel Martinelli shone with a decisive goal, helping Selecao complete a 2-1 comeback victory to win a ticket to the next round.
This is also Brazil's first victory in a match where they were led since coach Carlo Ancelotti took over the team.
After the match, Cunha praised Martinelli but emphasized that collective strength is the factor that makes Brazil's success.
We don't need an individual to solve all problems. The special thing about this team is that anyone can become a hero when the team needs them," the 27-year-old striker shared.
Brazil's next opponent will be the winner of the match between Norway and Ivory Coast. The round of 16 match is scheduled to take place on July 5th at MetLife Stadium (New Jersey, USA).
