The role of foreign players
The Vietnam Volleyball Federation (VFV) stopped allowing foreign players to participate in the National Volleyball Championship after 2012. Many teams have since relied on domestic players but have not made an outstanding mark.
It was not until the 2022 National Volleyball Championship that foreign players were officially allowed to return to compete. Most teams (men's and women's) in the national volleyball championship are actively hiring foreign players. This has reflected the need for foreign players in the squad.
Professional problems force teams to hire foreign players. They are the players who play better than domestic players, with enough finishing ability to create a decisive highlight in the match.
In 2022, VFV recorded 17 foreign players (men's and women's) participating in the national volleyball championship. In 2023, the number of foreign players (men, women) competed in the tournament was 23. In 2024, the number of foreign players (men and women) registered to compete is 34.
The Organizing Committee of the 2025 National Volleyball Championship predicts that the number of foreign players (men's and women's) coming to Vietnam will continue to increase. Currently, 15/16 teams are actively hiring additional players to the squad. Looking at the last 3 seasons, the championship winning teams all have great professional contributions from foreign players.
In 2022, Geleximco Thai Binh women's team won the national championship when the squad was reinforced with player Polina Rahimova (Azerbaijan) and in 2023, Sanest Khanh Hoa men's team won the national championship thanks to the mark of hitter Evandro (Brazil). Last year, the VTV Binh Dien Long An women's team won the national championship thanks to the efforts of foreign hitter Joyce Agbolossou (Germany).
The 2025 National Volleyball Championship will kick off its first phase on March 22. The teams have 1 month to prepare their forces before officially taking the field.
Finding opportunities to develop image
The top goal of the teams participating in the national volleyball championship is to stay in the league. When there is a good force, each team aims for the highest achievement.
The National Volleyball Championship in Vietnam recorded that most of the participating teams (men's and women's) are from the competent units of provinces, cities and sectors. The two teams participating in the 2025 National Volleyball Championship are under the management of Duc Giang Lao Cai Chemicals and Vietinbank.
According to the regulations of the national volleyball championship, each team is allowed to hire a maximum of 2 foreign players and at one time, only 1 player is allowed to play.
VFV has noted that many teams have strong sponsorship resources to hire 2 hitters to improve their skills. However, not all teams are doing well in finding foreign players who are qualified and have the right spending.
VFV representative said: Currently, many individuals and units have grasped the need to find foreign players from Vietnamese volleyball teams, so they have a close relationship with teams to broker player transfers. The value of foreign players is completely a working agreement between the parties with direct needs".
Foreign players come to Vietnam for many purposes, including earning income. Next, in their professional capacity and based on a contract commitment, they must ensure the quality of competition on the field. In return, the team hired foreign players to achieve results and have the best image in front of fans.
