Sinner shockingly eliminated in Round 2 of Roland Garros 2026

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner caused a big surprise when he was eliminated by Juan Manuel Cerundolo right from the 2nd round of Roland Garros 2026 despite leading by 2 sets.

In the match taking place on the evening of May 28 (Vietnam time), Sinner had a very favorable start when he won the first 2 sets with scores of 6-3 and 6-2. The Italian player even led 5-1 in set 3 and stood before the opportunity to close the match after only 3 sets.

However, a turning point occurred when Sinner suddenly declined in fitness. The 24-year-old player continuously missed decisive service games and had to ask for out-of-court medical attention when leading 5-4 in set 3.

After this period, Sinner no longer maintained stable form. Meanwhile, Cerundolo took advantage of the opponent's fatigue to create an impressive comeback with a final victory of 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1.

This is considered a major shock for Roland Garros 2026 when Cerundolo, a player currently ranked 56th in the world, became the first person to eliminate the No. 1 seed before the 3rd round at Roland Garros since 2000.

Roland Garros is also the only Grand Slam title missing in Sinner's collection. The Italian tennis player is aiming for the goal of completing a Career Grand Slam after a series of impressive performances in recent times.

Before stopping in Paris, Sinner had a 30-match winning streak with a record of 37 wins and 3 defeats in the 2026 season. He has also just experienced a successful clay court season with a series of major titles.

Sinner's early elimination and injury forced Carlos Alcaraz to withdraw, opening up the opportunity for a new champion to appear at Roland Garros 2026.

In the next round, Cerundolo will face Martin Landaluce or Vit Kopriva to compete for a ticket to the next round.
