Samuele Privitera is a member of Hagens Berman Jayco's squad, competing in the U23 event of the tournament. While going downhill at a speed of about 70 km/h in the Pontey area, he unfortunately collided with a gate along the road. The collision caused his helmet to be thrown off, leading to serious head injuries.
Immediately after the accident, medical forces were present to provide emergency care on the spot. However, Privitera's heart was determined to have stopped beating and despite being urgently transferred to Aosta Hospital, doctors could not save his life.
In response to the heartbreaking incident, the organizing committee of Giro della Valle d'Aosta decided to cancel the second race taking place on July 17. The tournament continues to return on July 18, with a banquet ceremony for unfortunate young trackers.
The Italian authorities immediately investigated the cause of the accident, focusing on clarifying the reason why Privitera's helmet fell during the match.
