According to the registered list, Mr. Nguyen Hong Minh - Deputy Director of the Department of Physical Education and Sports holds the role of Head of the Vietnamese sports delegation at ASIAD 20. The Deputy Head of the delegation is Mr. Hoang Quoc Vinh - Head of the High-Performance Sports Department.
The delegation's force includes athletes, delegation officials, team leaders, coaches, experts and professional staff. Among them, there are 13 delegation officials and 6 medical staff participating in supporting the delegation during the competition in Japan.
With 348 athletes participating in 33 sports and sub-sports, Vietnam aims to improve its performance compared to the most recent ASIAD. At ASIAD 19 held in Hangzhou (China) in 2023, the Vietnamese sports delegation won 3 gold medals, 5 silver medals and 19 bronze medals, ranking 21st in the overall standings.
The goal of winning over 4 gold medals at ASIAD 20 means that Vietnamese sports need to surpass the gold medal achievement of the previous Games. This is not an easy task when the continental arena gathers many top world athletes in many Olympic sports and strength sports.
Among the expected sports, sepak takraw continues to be one of the key contents of Vietnamese sports. Besides, karatedo, shooting, athletics, gymnastics, boat racing, mixed martial arts (MMA) and e-sports are also expected to bring high achievements.
Expanding the force participating in many sports helps the Vietnamese sports delegation have more opportunities to compete for medals. However, the ability to realize the goal depends on the performance of the athletes, professional preparation as well as the ability to directly compete with strong sports backgrounds in Asia.
ASIAD 20 is not only a medal race but also an opportunity to assess the capacity of Vietnamese sports at the continental level. The results in Japan will be the basis for departments to continue to adjust training, selection and force preparation for the next international arenas.
